Merri CHS

The Merri Community Health Service is a State Government funded Community Health Consultation and Allied Health Service group that runs ten health centres within the northern region of Melbourne.

The MCHS Centre in Bell St, Coburg is primarily a single storey building with a small second storey section for staff at the rear of the building. The large ground floor was built around a central courtyard but opportunity for staff and clients to appreciate the space was limited.

The layout of the centre was ad hoc necessitating lengthy travel distances or staff and clientele. Security was also a concern, for example, clients accessing toilets had to be escorted through staff areas.

The accepted design re-focused the ground floor on the central courtyard. The results to date on monitoring of energy usage indicate substantial saving to the client.
